A NEW FESTIVAL BRINGING TOGETHER ARTIST-RUN INITIATIVES AND EMERGING ARTISTS FROM ACROSS AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND FOR 10 DAYS OF EXHIBITIONS, MUSIC, PERFORMANCE, PARTIES AND TALKS.
Title: Surface World
Artists: Cat Mueller, Tom Buckland, Grace Blake, Patrick Larmour and Nicci Haynes
CURATOR: Karena Keys
Location: 126 Bathurst Street
Surface World is an exhibition that unites the diverse practices of five Canberra artists through the notion that a surface is merely a spatial boundary that exists to be manipulated. A surface is the two-dimensional outer layer of a three-dimensional object; a border between two worlds that can be negotiated to offer an illusion of space, transformed to alter spatial perceptions, disrupted to shatter illusions or peeled away, stretched or squeezed to stand alone as objects. Surface World includes bold and experimental paintings, video and installation by five artists who are not afraid to push the boundary.
Australian National Capital Artists Inc. (ANCA) is an artist-run-initiative in Canberra. For 25 years ANCA’s mission has been to promote visual arts and cultural development through a dynamic and sustainable organisation that provides artists with access to affordable, professional studio and exhibition space.
ANCA Gallery is supported by the ACT Government, and aims to present a quality and varied exhibition program that supports emerging and established artists and curators. Through a considered exhibition program ANCA Gallery seeks to connect with local, regional and national communities by working with artists and curators who engage with contemporary artistic discourse in distinct and inventive ways.
